China questions why US should get first shot to host G20 again. China has raised concerns about the United States hosting the G20 in 2026, as President Joe Biden’s administration has previously declared.
The G20 countries rotate their presidency of the organisation, which includes the annual summit of world leaders, and the US has stated that it will take over once India, Brazil, and South Africa finish their yearlong terms.
As China questions why US should get first shot to host G20 again, China’s complaint is primarily symbolic, as the decision is unlikely to be reversed. The individuals requested anonymity since the negotiations on the sidelines of the current G20 meeting in India are secret.
The Financial Times was the first to report on China’s move.

According to sources who did not know the basis for China’s complaints, Beijing requested that its dissatisfaction be noted. However, by the end of 2025, every members will have hosted at least one summit, at which time the cycle will begin again. In 2008, the United States hosted the first G20 meeting in Washington, DC.
Attempts to undermine the convention reflect China’s conflict with the United States over topics ranging from Taiwan to technology export regulations.
Neither Chinese President Xi Jinping nor Russian President Vladimir Putin will be in New Delhi for the G20 summit.
The G20 is divided into regional sub-groups, the members of which determine who will host the summit. The United States is in the same group as Canada, Australia, and Saudi Arabia.
The White House did not reply quickly to a request for comment.
Earlier on Saturday, US Deputy National Security Advisor Jon Finer told reporters in New Delhi that India, Brazil, and South Africa – “the three democratic members of the BRICS” group that also includes China and Russia – are the current and next two G20 chairs.
“They are committed to the G20 success, so is the United States. We will host after those three,” Finer said. “And if China is not, that’s unfortunate for everyone, but much more unfortunate, we believe, for China.”
