The Punjab government, led by the PML-N, has decided to restore free WiFi services in five districts of the province.
The provincial government plans to restore and restart free WiFi in five districts: Lahore, Multan, Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, and Bahawalpur.
In its previous tenure, the PML-N government launched the Free WiFi service to empower people through technology in order to bridge the digital divide by providing free internet access.
Punjab Chief Minister Hamza Shehbaz took note of the non-operation of approximately 106 free Wifi hotspots throughout the province and directed the Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) to restore the services within a week.
The government will include funding for free WiFi in the upcoming fiscal year’s budget.
The Punjab chief minister also directed PITB to take steps to extend these services to other districts throughout the province.
It is important to note that the services were not operational due to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government’s failure to pay outstanding bills.
