National Assembly to slect leader of the opposition today

National Assembly Deputy Speaker Zahid Akram Durrani sought the names of legislators for the election of the opposition leader in the House on Friday.

Members of the opposition in the National Assembly have been instructed to submit their nominations for opposition leader to the speaker’s chamber by 3 p.m. today.

The opposition leader will be declared by a parliamentarian from the opposition benches who receive a majority vote from other lawmakers.

As the House proceedings began, Zahid Durrani announced that the signature count of members of the National Assembly on the proposed nominations would be done in their presence at 4 p.m. today (Friday), after which the nominee with the most votes would be named Leader of the Opposition.

The position of Leader of the Opposition had become vacant following the success of a no-confidence vote against the Prime Minister on April 10, which resulted in an internal change.
