PPP demands elections after reforms

PPP says delay in elections ‘unacceptable’

On Thursday, PPP Information Secretary Faisal Kareem Kundi dispelled rumors that the Pakistan Peoples Party would like to remain in power by stating that the party would like to hold fresh elections as soon as the electoral reforms are completed.

In response to a question about PML-N leaders making statements about early elections, Kareem stated that our objectives have been crystal clear from day one. “Complete the reforms and move forward with new elections,” he said, adding that PML-N and PPP are in agreement on the matter.

The PPP information secretary went on to say that if election reforms were not implemented, the next government would immediately become controversial as losing parties would cry foul.

When asked if the sole purpose of election reforms was to undo the PTI’s election reforms, Kuni responded that election reforms were intended to address a wide range of issues, including the fairness of elections and the prevention of external interference.

He added that they wanted PTI to be a part of the election reform process but could not provide a specific timeline.

In response to a question about how quickly the government can organize new elections, he stated that the PPP is prepared for elections even if they are held tomorrow. “As soon as ECP completes its preparations, we will also move immediately toward new elections.”

On the other hand, according to PPP General Secretary Farhat Ullah Baber, both PML-N and PPP agree on the need for new elections.

When asked what the actual meaning of election reforms was, he cited external interference, electronic voting machines (EVMs), and the right to vote for overseas Pakistanis.
