CDA Plans Electric Tram Service in Islamabad, Feasibility Due in Three Months

The Capital Development Authority has initiated plans to introduce an electric tram service in Islamabad following directives from the Federal Interior Minister.

The authority has been tasked with completing a feasibility study within three months, after which the project will be presented for approval in the upcoming federal budget.

Feasibility Study and Proposed Routes

In response to the directive, CDA has begun the process of hiring a consultant to prepare detailed technical and operational assessments.

According to preliminary proposals, the first tram route will run from Islamabad International Airport to Lake View Park, connecting key commercial, residential, and recreational areas of the capital.

A second proposed route will extend from Rawat to Lake View Park, aiming to link suburban localities with Islamabad’s central urban corridor. Officials expect the feasibility report to be finalized before June.

Cashless, Integrated Public Transport System

The proposed electric tram system is envisioned as a modern, cashless public transport network, featuring digital ticketing and smart payment solutions.

Authorities are also exploring integration of the tram service with a proposed glass train route toward Murree, strengthening tourism connectivity and improving regional mobility.

Environmental and Urban Impact

Officials believe the electric tram service will play a key role in reducing traffic congestion, lowering carbon emissions, and promoting sustainable urban transport in Islamabad.

The preliminary plan also includes the development of charging stations, tram depots, and related infrastructure to support long-term operations.

Once the feasibility study is completed and approved, the project will move into the tendering and construction phases.

If implemented, the electric tram could mark a major shift toward eco-friendly mass transit in the federal capital, aligning Islamabad’s transport system with global urban mobility standards.
