Sindh Updates Vehicle Number Plate Rules Under Motor Vehicle Amendment Act 2024

The Sindh Excise, Taxation, and Narcotics Control Department has rolled out updated regulations for vehicle number plates following the enforcement of the Motor Vehicle (Amendment) Act 2024.

A formal notification has been issued to give legal effect to the changes, which aim to improve accuracy, transparency, and traceability in vehicle registration across the province.

Number Plates to Be Issued in CNIC Holder’s Name

Under the revised law, vehicle number plates will now be issued in the name of the vehicle owner’s Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC). The person whose CNIC is used at the time of registration will be considered the official and lawful holder of the number plate.

Authorities said the measure will help eliminate ambiguity in ownership records and reduce misuse of vehicle registration details.

Introduction of CNIC-Linked Number Plate Series

Officials confirmed that two new number plate series have been introduced as part of the CNIC-based registration system. These series will be directly connected to the national identity database, allowing more efficient monitoring and verification.

Facility to Transfer Existing Number Plates

In another key development, the amended rules allow vehicle owners to retain their existing number plates and affix them to another vehicle purchased in their own name, subject to compliance with departmental requirements.

New Rules Now in Effect

The Sindh Excise Department stated that the amended provisions are now fully in force and will be implemented in line with the newly issued notification.

The reforms are part of ongoing efforts to modernize Sindh’s motor vehicle administration and strengthen governance through digital recordkeeping.
