The Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) has announced plans to procure and install bird repellent systems at major airports across the country, including Islamabad, Karachi, Peshawar, Faisalabad, and Multan, as part of efforts to enhance aviation safety.
Officials confirmed that the project is currently under consideration and undergoing trials at one of Pakistan’s major airports.
Bird Strikes Pose Significant Risk to Aircraft
Bird strikes are a major hazard in aviation, potentially damaging aircraft engines and fuselages during takeoff and landing. Over recent years, multiple incidents at Pakistani airports have highlighted the need for preventive technologies.
One notable case occurred in December last year, when a Flydubai flight from Dubai to Lahore experienced a bird strike just outside Lahore Airport.
The pilot immediately reported the incident to the Pakistan Airports Authority. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and the aircraft sustained minor damage.
Preventive Measures Under Review
The introduction of bird repellent systems aims to minimize the risk of collisions between birds and aircraft, ensuring safer operations at Pakistan’s busiest airports. Authorities are evaluating the technology and its effectiveness before nationwide implementation.
