Basant 2026 in Lahore: Mandatory Safety Rods and New Guidelines Issued for Motorcyclists

Basant 2026 in Lahore: Mandatory Safety Rods and New Guidelines Issued for Motorcyclists

With the Basant festival scheduled from February 6 to 8, Lahore authorities have announced strict motorcycle safety guidelines to reduce the risk of kite string injuries and road accidents during celebrations.

Officials say the measures are part of the government’s “Mehfooz Basant” (Safe Basant) initiative, aimed at protecting riders and pedestrians across the city.

Safety Rods Made Mandatory on All Motorcycles

Under the Kite Flying Ordinance 2025, all motorcycles must be fitted with safety rods during the three-day festival. Motorcycles without safety rods will not be allowed on Lahore’s roads during Basant.

Safety rods help protect riders from dangerous kite strings, which can cause severe injuries, especially at neck and face level.

Law enforcement agencies have been directed to stop and penalize riders who fail to comply with the rule.

Free Installation Camps to Be Set Up Across Lahore

To help motorcyclists comply with the new rules, authorities will establish around 100 road safety camps in different parts of the city.

According to officials:

  • Each camp can install safety rods on 500–600 motorcycles per day

  • Total daily coverage will reach 50,000 to 60,000 motorcycles

  • Nearly one million safety rods are expected to be installed before and during the festival

Motorcyclists are advised to get safety rods installed in advance to avoid last-minute congestion and penalties.

Strict Enforcement and Legal Action for Violations

Police and district administration teams will conduct continuous road checks during the festival days.

Authorities confirmed that:

  • Motorcycles without safety rods will face immediate fines and possible seizure

  • Violations of kite flying and safety regulations can lead to registration of criminal cases

  • Over 200 cases have already been registered against illegal kite flying ahead of Basant

Officials stressed that enforcement will remain active throughout the festival period.

Motorcyclists Urged to Follow Safety Precautions

Besides installing safety rods, riders have been advised to:

  • Avoid riding at high speeds in kite-flying areas

  • Wear helmets with full-face protection

  • Stay alert near rooftops and narrow streets where kite strings are common

Authorities said responsible riding behavior is just as important as mechanical safety measures.

Public Cooperation Key to Safe Basant Celebrations

Lahore Commissioner Maryam Khan urged citizens, especially motorcyclists, to cooperate with law enforcement and follow all safety instructions.

She emphasized that the purpose of Basant is celebration, not tragedy, and that strict compliance with motorcycle safety guidelines can help prevent serious injuries and fatalities during the festival.
