Lahore: Residents of Lahore may enjoy a four-day-long weekend in the first week of February as authorities consider additional holidays to coincide with Basant festivities and Kashmir Day, according to official sources.
Public Holiday on February 5 for Kashmir Day
February 5 is already a public holiday across Pakistan for Kashmir Day, while Saturday and Sunday fall on February 8 and 9, making them regular weekly holidays. Authorities are now considering declaring Friday, February 7, as an additional holiday, which would result in four consecutive days off for Lahoris.
Basant Festival Scheduled for February 6–8
The Punjab government has already announced that Basant celebrations in Lahore will take place on February 6, 7, and 8, reviving the city’s traditional kite-flying festival under regulated conditions.
If Friday is declared a holiday, residents will be able to participate in Basant events more comfortably without work or school commitments.
Safety and Traffic Management Behind Holiday Proposal
Officials said the proposed additional holiday is aimed at:
-
Reducing traffic congestion
-
Limiting unnecessary motorcycle movement
-
Improving public safety during kite-flying activities
-
Allowing better law enforcement deployment
Authorities believe fewer commuters on the roads will help maintain order and reduce accident risks during the festival period.
Strict Action Against Illegal Basant Activities
While celebrations are permitted, the Punjab government has reiterated that strict penalties will be enforced against illegal Basant practices, including the use of prohibited kite strings and unsafe rooftop gatherings.
Law enforcement agencies will remain on high alert throughout the festival days to ensure public safety.
The proposal to declare Friday a holiday is still under review, and an official notification is expected if approved. If confirmed, Lahore will experience one of the longest festive weekends in recent years, combining Kashmir Day, Basant, and weekend holidays into a single extended break.
