Sindh orders Karachi zoo to stop breeding of exotic animals

The Sindh government has directed the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) to immediately stop the breeding of exotic animals at the Karachi Zoo, especially big cats like lions.

Sindh Chief Secretary Asif Hyder Shah issued the directive during a high-level meeting, which focused on the current condition of exotic animals, zoo management practices, and future planning.

Shah said the Sindh government was committed to animal welfare and responsible wildlife management. He warned that uncontrolled breeding of exotic animals, especially lions and other big cats, creates serious problems related to animal health, space limitations, public safety and long-term care.

Zoo and KMC officials were instructed to take immediate steps to halt further breeding and to prepare a clear, time-bound plan in consultation with qualified wildlife experts.

The chief secretary stressed that expert input was essential to ensure all measures were humane, scientifically appropriate and in line with international conservation standards.

He also ordered a detailed assessment of all exotic animals currently housed at the Karachi Zoo. This review will include their health condition, living environment, and future care requirements.

“The focus must remain on responsible wildlife management,” the chief secretary said, adding that unnecessary captivity and breeding of exotic animals should be discouraged.

The decision comes after the birth of three lion cubs at the zoo last month, which raised concerns about overcrowding and the zoo’s ability to properly manage exotic species.
