The Data Darbar expansion project was officially launched to upgrade facilities at the shrine while protecting its spiritual character.
The project aims to ease traffic congestion, improve pedestrian safety, and enhance the overall condition of the surrounding area.
Auqaf Secretary Dr. Ehsan Bhutta said the project is being jointly implemented by the Lahore Development Authority (TEPA), the Communication and Works Department, NESPAK, and the Auqaf Department.
He said the project includes the remodelling of Bhati Chowk, development of a modern sitting area in front of the shrine, upgrading of pedestrian zones, façade improvement, construction of a pedestrian underpass and the provision of new parking facilities and a wagon stand.
The plan also covers rehabilitation of the road from Data Darbar to Azadi Chowk, widening of Mohni Road, and extensive landscaping, ornamental works, streetlights, signage, and road furniture.
The project involves the acquisition of eight kanals of land around Bhati Chowk and Mohni Road.
Once completed, it is expected to benefit around 310,000 vehicles daily by ensuring smoother traffic flow, safer pedestrian movement, improved aesthetics, and reduced smog and carbon emissions.
The Data Darbar expansion project is estimated to cost Rs. 2.5 billion and is scheduled for completion within six months.
It is being funded through the Lahore Development Authority’s own resources and the Auqaf Department’s Annual Development Programme (ADP) scheme.
