Saudi Arabia to build a unique ‘Sky Stadium’ for 2034 FIFA World Cup

Saudi Arabia is leaving the world behind with its rapid development and reforms, with the latest in its efforts to become a sporting powerhouse.

The country has revealed plans for its most jaw-dropping project yet—the world’s first-ever “Sky Stadium”, which is expected to host matches during the 2034 FIFA World Cup.

According to the latest renderings, the futuristic football arena will be suspended 350 meters above the desert floor.

Reports from foreign media indicate that the stadium is part of the NEOM mega-city project and will be called NEOM Stadium. It will seat 46,000 spectators and is designed to operate entirely on solar and wind power, making it one of the most environmentally sustainable sports venues ever built. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2027 and is projected to be completed by 2032 — well ahead of the 2034 World Cup.

Integration with ‘The Line’

The stadium will be integrated into “The Line”, NEOM’s linear city project that has become a global symbol of futuristic urban design and innovation.

However, building a structure of this scale and height brings its own set of engineering challenges. Experts say the project will require groundbreaking solutions for safety, accessibility, and ventilation due to its elevated position in the desert landscape.

While many fans and observers have praised the project as a “revolutionary leap” for global sports, others have expressed scepticism about its feasibility and structural safety, given the immense logistical demands of building a floating stadium in the desert.

Despite the technical hurdles, FIFA has given preliminary endorsement to the project, describing it as a venue that could “set new benchmarks for eco-friendly and sustainable sports infrastructure.”

In addition to the Sky Stadium, Saudi Arabia has announced 15 new stadiums as part of its World Cup preparations, including the King Salman International Stadium in Riyadh, expected to be the largest in the Kingdom, with a capacity of over 92,000 upon its completion in 2029.

If completed on schedule, the NEOM Sky Stadium could become one of the most iconic sporting landmarks in history, a bold statement of how Saudi Arabia intends to reshape not just the game but the stage on which it’s played.
