Punjab officials have decided to strengthen the Riot Management Police, a force tasked with dispersing violent protesters and controlling unrest.

According to police officials, the department will purchase horses and dogs, along with two water cannons and an armored vehicle for handling sit-ins and demonstrations.

Eight Belgian Malinois dogs worth Rs5 million and six high-breed horses costing the same amount will be acquired and trained by professional trainers.

Officials said the animals will be deployed during protests and sit-ins as needed.

The Lahore and Rawalpindi units of the Riot Management Police will receive the water cannons and armored vehicle, while the Anti-Riot Force’s existing equipment will also be used when required.

Tenders for the purchase of the animals and vehicles are expected to be issued within the current fiscal year.
