Islamabad launches crackdown on smoke-emitting vehicles.
After the closure of brick kilns to tackle pollution, Islamabad’s administration has decided to crack down on vehicles that emit excessive smoke.
As part of this initiative, motorists can get their vehicles tested for emissions free of charge at three designated sites across the city until August 31.
After this date, authorities will begin issuing substantial fines to vehicles found entering the city with visible smoke emissions.
Enhancing Air Quality
The campaign is designed to enhance air quality and encourage environmentally responsible behavior. Many residents have expressed support for the effort and have called on officials to expand the number of testing centers to help minimize waiting times.
Free emission checks are currently available at the Old Parade Ground, F-9 Park, and the Excise Office.
The service, which began on July 15, exempts vehicles manufactured in 2021 or later from inspection during the initial phase.
Both private and commercial vehicles are being assessed using equipment that meets international standards. Those who pass the test receive a barcode sticker for their windscreen as proof of compliance.
In the first two weeks, 2,778 vehicles have been inspected, with 2,665 meeting the required standards.
Officials have announced that starting September 1, the complimentary testing service will end, and vehicles emitting smoke will be strictly prohibited from entering Islamabad. Offenders will face significant penalties.
