Court sentences life imprisonment to Usman Mirza

ISLAMABAD: An additional sessions court in Islamabad has sentenced Usman Mirza, the main culprit in the Islamabad couple harassment case, to life in jail.

Session Extensions Four others were condemned to live in jail by Judge Atta Rabbani, but two accomplices were acquitted. During the hearing, all of the defendants, including Mirza, were produced in court.

Farhan Shaheen, one of the defendants, was questioned by the sessions judge about whether he was present when the incident occurred. “I am innocent and I was not present at the time of the occurrence,” Shaheen said.

The court then ordered the police to return the accused to them.

After the hearing, the judge awarded life imprisonment to Usman Mirza, Hafiz Atta ur Rehman, Adaras Qayyum Butt, Farhan Shaheen, and Mohib Bangash.

Meanwhile, Umar Bilal and Rehan Hassan Mughal were acquitted.

The case

In July of last year, a video depicting the primary accused in the case, Mirza, assaulting and harassing a young couple in a room full of other men leaked on social media.

The Islamabad police arrested Mirza and filed a first information report (FIR) in the case just hours after the video went viral.

In the Islamabad couple harassment case, seven people were indicted, including Usman Mirza.
