Mufti Taqi Usmani, a famous Islamic scholar, expressed deep concern Monday about the growing disagreement among the country’s top political figures, saying that Islamic values are being violated in the country’s political squabbling.
Prime Minister Imran Khan has made a succession of harsh statements about his political opponents in the days since the Opposition filed a no-trust motion against him. Mufti Usmani’s statement was posted on his official Twitter account today.
“It’s frightening to think about how the Islamic rules and values are being abused in political squabbles. May Allah keep us safe from the consequences. In Surah Al-Hujurat, the Holy Qur’an says, do not make fun of one another, do not gossip, do not be suspicious, and do not call anyone by name.”
He also urged the political leadership to be decent as it is also detrimental to society.
“Whether the difference is political or ideological, to make it a matter of taking one’s life and abusing each other is deadly for the society. Criticism is done through arguments and not by vulgar language. Think about where we are going,” he said.
Shujaat’s advice to PM
A prominent politician and the leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-Q, also condemned the current political squabble, claiming that if Prime Minister Imran Khan had followed Quranic teachings, he would not have attempted to smear or call politicians names.
He asked him to keep decency and tolerance in mind.
On Sunday, Shujaat was reacting to the Prime Minister’s recent attacks on the country’s political class.
“If Imran Khan had studied verse 11 of Surah Al-Hujurat with translation, he would not have insulted political leaders and called them names in his speeches,” the PML-Q leader added.
Shujaat delivered the phrase, “O you who believe, no man should ever laugh at other men.”
“Maybe, the latter is better than the former. Nor should women (ever scoff) at other women. Maybe, the latter women are better than the former ones. And do not find fault with one another, nor call one another with bad nicknames. Bad is the name of sinfulness after embracing Faith. If anyone does not repent, then such people are the wrongdoers.”
“My advice to all politicians is not to give up on civility and tolerance in politics,” Shujaat said, adding, “My advice to all politicians is not to give up on politeness and tolerance in politics.”
