Siraj-ul-Haq resigns from JI leadership. Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Chief Siraj-ul-Haq tendered his resignation from the party’s leadership on Monday in the wake of a disappointing performance in Pakistan’s 2024 general elections.

In a statement posted on the social media platform X, Siraj-ul-Haq took full responsibility for the electoral setback, stating, “Accepting responsibility for the defeat in the election, I resign from the leadership of Jamaat-e-Islami.”

Unofficial results from the elections revealed that Jamaat-e-Islami failed to secure a single seat in the National Assembly. The party’s electoral presence was limited, with only two seats secured in Sindh, three in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and one in the Balochistan assemblies.

Siraj-ul-Haq’s decision to step down follows a similar move by Jahangir Khan Tareen, the patron-in-chief of the Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party (IPP), who announced his resignation from party leadership and his withdrawal from politics altogether.

In his resignation statement on X, formerly known as Twitter, Tareen expressed gratitude to his supporters and extended congratulations to his political opponents.

The resignation of both Siraj-ul-Haq and Jahangir Khan Tareen underscores the significance of accountability within Pakistan’s political landscape, with leaders acknowledging responsibility for electoral outcomes and making way for potential leadership transitions.
