Barrister Gohar Khan replaces Imran Khan as new PTI chairman. Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, a legal luminary affiliated with the party, has assumed the role of chairman unopposed.
This leadership transition comes in the wake of the prolonged detention of the former chairman, Imran Khan, who spent over 100 days behind bars.
The PTI’s intra-party elections, conducted as per the directives of the Election Commission of Pakistan, also saw the election of Omar Ayub Khan, a former minister and a close confidant of Imran Khan, as the central secretary general of the party.
The details surrounding the intra-party polling, including the names of other candidates and the location, were initially shrouded in secrecy by the PTI spokesman.
However, it was later revealed that the polling took place in Ranogarhi, Peshawar, with an approximate 500-member electoral body participating in the democratic process.
Highlighting the procedural aspects, the Chief Election Commissioner of PTI informed local media that the elections adhered to the party’s rules of 2020, which underwent revisions in 2022.
Notably, party members exercised their voting rights by casting their ballots for the entire panel.
This electoral development comes on the heels of the annulment of PTI’s previous intra-party polls held in June of the preceding year by Pakistan’s top electoral watchdog.
As Barrister Gohar Khan replaces Imran Khan as new PTI chairman, the Election Commission, citing objections, mandated PTI to conduct fresh elections within a 20-day timeframe, warning of potential consequences, including the loss of the party’s symbol, the bat.
