The authorities have linked this upswing to the relaxation of COVID-19 restrictions and the resurgence of familiar pathogens, including influenza, mycoplasma pneumoniae, respiratory syncytial virus, and the COVID-19 virus.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention highlight that mycoplasma pneumoniae bacteria can cause mild respiratory infections but, in some cases, lead to more serious lung infections requiring hospital care.
Although undiagnosed pneumonia was not explicitly discussed in the NHC press conference, a careful examination of the transcript reveals a speaker alluding to a noticeable increase in respiratory illnesses compared to three years ago.

Adding to the complexity of the situation, Beijing is currently facing an intense cold spell, with state media predicting temperatures to plunge far below freezing by Friday.
Wang Quanyi, deputy director and chief epidemiological expert at the Beijing Center for Disease Control and Prevention, disclosed that Beijing is experiencing a convergence of multiple pathogens, making the situation more challenging.
Reports indicate that hospitals in Beijing and Liaoning are on the brink of collapse due to an overwhelming surge of sick children.
The outbreak has raised the possibility of school closures. Recent scenes at Beijing’s Capital Institute of Pediatrics’ Children’s Hospital, where parents and children navigated crowded corridors, underscore the severity of the situation.
The international community received an early alert from ProMED, a vigilant media and public disease surveillance system, which flagged undiagnosed pneumonia clusters among children in northern China in late December. ProMED played a crucial role in alerting the world to the emergence of the novel coronavirus in 2019.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has officially requested detailed information from China regarding the increase in respiratory illnesses and reported pneumonia clusters in children.
Simultaneously, the WHO issued a public health advisory, urging individuals to take steps to reduce their exposure risk.
