The province’s capital, Lahore, finds itself grappling with alarming pollution levels, prompting the Punjab Cabinet Anti-Smog Committee to deliberate on a series of crucial decisions aimed at mitigating the environmental and health risks.
Key measures under consideration include the declaration of school holidays and the temporary closure of markets.
Reports suggest that the Anti-Smog Committee is poised to make an official announcement on Friday, signaling the shutdown of schools and other educational institutions.
On Saturday, markets, gyms, cinemas, theatres, and factories may face closure, with no dine-in services allowed in restaurants. Only takeaway and home delivery services are expected to be permitted.

Furthermore, factories found in defiance of state directives may incur heavy fines and potential closure.
The proposed plan also entails restricting public and private vehicle movement, with half of the government employees being asked to work remotely.
The deteriorating air quality in Lahore has reached hazardous levels, with the Air Quality Index hovering around 250, signifying a significant health risk.
The situation has become a recurring challenge, leading to the emergence of a so-called “fifth season” of smog, adversely impacting the health and daily lives of residents.
Experts have issued advisories, urging people to minimize outdoor exposure, keep windows closed to avoid polluted air, wear masks when outdoors, and consider using air purifiers for improved indoor air quality.
While the proposed lockdown measures reflect a concerted effort to address the immediate crisis, there remains a pressing need for sustainable, long-term solutions. This includes tackling the root causes of air pollution, such as stringent control of industrial emissions, promotion of cleaner energy alternatives, and the encouragement of public transportation.
