Tareen group plans to join opposition in no-confidence motion

Jahangir Tareen resigns as IPP chairman after losing election

ISLAMABAD: According to sources, the Jahangir Tareen group is considering joining the opposition in the no-trust motion against the PTI-led government.

Under the presidency of alienated PTI leader Jahangir Tareen, the Tareen group met at the home of Awn Chaudhry.

Tareen was given the ability to make the ultimate choice by the group.

According to insiders, the bulk of the group’s members decided to go all-in on politics and launch an anti-government campaign.

The majority of the group proposed siding with the PML-N in its anti-government position, while those from Jhang recommended keeping their independence.

According to sources, Tareen Group chose to make their approach public following the formal announcement of the no-trust move.

They went on to say that when the no-trust motion is tabled, the Tareen group may support the opposition, and that the PTI’s standing in the Tareen circle is “extremely weak.”

The Tareen group expressed concern that crucial local government candidates might not want to run on the PTI ticket. It took the position that inflation had broken the back of the ordinary man, causing widespread outrage, and that the group would take a proactive role in this area.

The Tareen group also stated that it would have meetings on a regular basis and would not dissuade political parties from contacting them.

Tareen formed a coalition of like-minded members in the National Assembly and the Punjab Assembly in May of last year.

Tareen created the organisation after the premier stated explicitly that the FIA would not be swayed to grant relief to the dissatisfied leader in the sugar scam investigation, but that he would personally investigate the matter to avoid political victimisation in the case.

After making a “firm decision” to move a no-trust motion against the government in the coming days over rising inflation and “failure” to address people’s woes, the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM), a nine-party opposition alliance led by the mainstream PML-N and JUI-F, has been active in reaching out and persuading the ruling PTI’s allies.

A PML-N team led by Shehbaz Sharif met with the PML-Q leadership in Lahore on Saturday for the first time in 14 years as part of efforts to gather support for the no-confidence vote.

As Fazl questioned about his health, Zardari expressed his willingness to throw his weight behind the move. The two talked about the country’s broader political predicament.

Fazl paid a visit to the Chaudhry brothers’ Gulberg home last week, persuading them to consider the PDM’s proposal to leave the government.
