‘Hamas‘ Halloween costume sparks controversy in Northern Ireland. Northern Irish authorities are investigating a puzzling incident involving an image circulated on social media portraying an individual dressed as a Hamas militant at a Halloween festival in Londonderry.
The image, displaying a person clad in combat gear with a Palestinian flag badge, a balaclava, and a headband featuring the word “Hamas” in Arabic while holding a toy weapon, has triggered scrutiny over its authenticity.
The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) has been unable to identify the individual despite making a public appeal for witnesses and reviewing security camera footage.
The acting chief constable, Jon Boutcher, raised the possibility that the image might have been artificially generated, casting doubt on its credibility during a policing board meeting.
“The suggestion… that it might even have been some sort of artificial intelligence image that was presented and has been circulated,” Boutcher expressed, adding a layer of uncertainty to the image’s origin.

Nigel Goddard, a local police chief, noted that no reports of the individual dressed in the described manner in Guildhall Square have been received, nor have any matching images been found online.
Goddard emphasized the importance of verifying information found online, highlighting the ambiguity surrounding the image’s intent and source.
As ‘Hamas’ Halloween costume sparks controversy in Northern Ireland, the four-day Halloween festival in Londonderry, renowned as Europe’s largest, drew in excess of 100,000 attendees, according to event organizers.
The alleged portrayal of an individual as a Hamas militant in the contentious image has prompted a meticulous inquiry by local law enforcement, with the possibility raised that it could have been generated through artificial intelligence technology.
As the investigation continues, uncertainties persist about the validity and intent behind the disseminated image.
