Indian teacher makes class slap Muslim student. While religious intolerance persists in India, a viral video depicting hatred towards Muslims has cast doubt on the purportedly secular state.

A teacher at a school in Uttar Pradesh, India‘s most populous state, was seen inciting Hindu students to attack one of their Muslim classmates and requesting that he be expelled from the school because of his faith.

Trapta Tyagi, the teacher, instructed the students to hit the Muslim child as punishment for “not learning the lesson.”

She was heard especially screaming out “all the Muslim kids,” indicating India’s relentless Islamophobia.

“I have declared that all Muslim children should go,” Tyagi is heard saying in the video.

“You are correct, it ruins the education,” a male voice is heard responding while the victim stands in front of the class, wailing and terrified.

The victim’s father, Mohammad Irshad, stated that he did not want to take any action because he negotiated a compromise when the school administration returned the child’s tuition payments.

“My son is good at his studies. He takes tuitions. We fail to understand why the teacher treated him like this. It seems that the teacher is filled with hate,” the 42-year-old added.

A report by Al Jazeera quoted Irshad as saying that, although the teacher accepted her mistake and apologised for her behaviour, he would move his son to a different school.

“She said she will never treat her students badly again,” he said. “But this is not the environment where I want my son to get an education and grow up in.”

Religious prejudice has reached “frightening” proportions in India, the world’s largest democracy, since the Hindu nationalist BJP came to power in 2015.

After a hardline Hindu group marched through the Muslim-dominated Nuh region in late July, blaring provocative songs on strong sound systems, the northern state of Haryana became the latest hotspot for religious violence in India.

Following that, seven people were murdered and over 70 were injured in rioting in Haryana’s Nuh and Gurugram districts.

The US State Department documented various atrocities on India’s religious minorities, including Muslims and Christians, in its annual reports on religious freedom.

Human rights organisations also accuse Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government of encouraging discriminatory religious nationalism against Muslim, Christian, and Sikh religious minorities.
