Former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s principal secretary Azam Khan claims that the US cypher drama was “pre-planned” by the ex-premier.

Azam, who has been “missing” since last month, has recorded his statement before a magistrate under CrPC 164, according to the sources, with no information on his whereabouts.

Khan, who was deposed by a parliamentary vote in April of last year, claimed on March 27, 2022, that Washington orchestrated the movement to depose him — and displayed the cypher to back up his claims.

As Imran Khan’s ex-secretary Azam Khan terms cypher gate ‘preplanned conspiracy’, in his confession, Azam said when he provided Imran with the cypher, he was “euphoric” and termed the language as a “US blunder”.

The ex-prime minister then said, according to Azam, that the cable could be used for “creating a narrative against establishment and opposition”.

According to the confession, Khan also told Azam that the cypher could be used to divert public attention away from “foreign involvement” in the opposition’s no-confidence motion.

Imran told Azam that he would display the cypher in public and “twist the narrative: a foreign conspiracy is being hatched in collusion with local partners and play [the] victim card,” according to Azam’s confession.

According to the confession, when Azam told Imran Khan that the cypher was a secret document whose contents could not be revealed to the public, the then-prime minister proposed a strategy.

He claimed that Imran convened a meeting with then-foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi and then-foreign secretary Sohail Mahmood, who would then inform him of the meeting’s minutes because the PTI chief had misplaced the original copy of the cable.
