A woman who knocked on a coffin during her funeral has died. 76-year-old Bella Montoya died after seven days in intensive care after being declared dead and surprising family members by tapping on her coffin during her funeral.

Bella Montoya suffered a stroke after spending seven days in intensive care, according to Ecuador’s health ministry. The statement also stated that she was under “permanent surveillance” while in the hospital.

Gilbert Barbera, her son, told a local newspaper, “This time my mother died.” My life will never be the same again.”

Ms. Montoya died on June 16 and was returned to the same funeral home before being buried in a public cemetery, according to local media.

According to local media accounts, Ms. Montoya had catalepsy, a disorder in which a person has a seizure, loses consciousness, and their body goes rigid.

After being certified deceased, Ms. Montoya was placed in a coffin and carried to her burial on June 9. After nearly 5 hours inside, the woman surprised her family by knocking on her coffin. During the vigil, she regained consciousness. Her relatives discovered her gasping for oxygen.

In a statement, the ministry said that the woman went into cardiorespiratory arrest – a loss of breathing and heart function – and did not respond to resuscitation attempts. The doctor on duty confirmed her death.

Ms Montoya’s son, Gilbert Rodolfo Balberan Montoya told local media that his mother was admitted at around 9 am, and at noon the doctors declared her dead.

She was placed in a coffin for several hours. A video has gone viral on the internet which shows Ms. Montoya lying in an open casket and breathing heavily. Paramedics are seen arriving and observing Ms. Montoya before moving her onto a stretcher in an ambulance.
