Asad Umar comes down hard on PPP-led government for poor performance

Asad Umar, the Federal Minister for Planning and Development, has slammed the PPP-led Sindh government once more, claiming that the “imposed regime” has done little to benefit the province’s people.

While speaking at an event in Karachi on Saturday, Umar stated that the incumbent PPP will lose power in the province after the next general elections in 2023 due to its “poor performance.”

“The PPP will not be able to form the next government in Karachi or the province,” the minister stated.

The metropolis’ residents, according to the federal minister, have been deprived of a modern public transit system. “Those who criticise the PTI government for failing to bring ‘change’ to Pakistan should ride the Green Line bus in Karachi,” Umar remarked.

He stated that, in accordance with the Supreme Court’s ruling, work on the Karachi Circular Railways (KCR) project would begin soon.

The government conditionally approved a financing structure for the Rs201 billion KCR project on Tuesday, despite warnings that the programme was fraught with dangers and was not financially sustainable.

The board of the Public-Private Partnership Authority (PPPA) adopted a financing scheme in which the government would provide roughly Rs90 billion in subsidies to help the private sector finish the project.

While Umar was not in politics at the time and was ideologically opposed to former military ruler Pervez Musharraf’s tenure, he added that “we did witness development work carried out in Karachi throughout his 8-year-long administration.”
