It has come to light that veteran columnist and journalist Orya Maqbool Jan was arrested by police inside his home.
After Orya Maqbool Jan was arrested, his fellow journalist broke the news of his detention on Twitter, which led to backlash from online users. The reason for the political analyst’s arrest has not yet been revealed, although it should be noted that he is well-known for being a vocal opponent of the ruling coalition.
People are demanding the quick release of Orya Maqbool Jan, a former bureaucrat, and labeling the action as an assault on free expression.
Earlier, senior anchorpersons Imran Riaz Khan and Aftab Iqbal were arrested from their houses in Lahore. Iqbal has been released while Imran Riaz is still in the custody of the police.
Orya Maqbool Jan columnist, and former civil servant of BPS-21 grade. He appears currently as an analyst on the Neo News television show Harf e Raaz.
Jan has been repeatedly criticized for being an extremist. Jan received attention in 2016 when he referred to a commercial of QMobile in which a woman wants to become a cricketer as ‘vulgar and provocative’.
He has also said that women should not take part in political processions “because Pakistani politics are not Islamic politics and women cannot remain safe there and hence are responsible for whatever harassment they have to face in these very un-Islamic processions”.
