Pakistan improves ranking on internet network residency index

ISLAMABAD: The Senate was informed on Friday that Pakistan has improved its ranking in the internet network residency index (NRI) after the country jumped 14 points on the worldwide index in 2021.

During the question period, the Information and Technology Ministry presented a written response informing the House that Pakistan’s Internet Network Residency Index ranking has improved by 14 spots, from 111 to 97.

The country is now ranked 9th in terms of subscribers and 68th in terms of technology adoption.

Last year, the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunications approved funding for Universal Service Fund (USF) initiatives for high-speed internet services and contracts for next-generation broadband.

During the session, Ali Muhammad Khan, Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs, informed the panel that the federal government was working to make the country’s small airports operational.

He explained that different airports are not operational due to a lack of commercial flights, and that a decision on whether or not to make small airports operational will be made based on the commercial viability of routes.

The chairman of the Senate, noting the attendance of the secretary of commerce, who had previously skipped the session, explained that the former was unable to attend the last meeting owing to a variety of circumstances. The chair requested that he verify that his personnel were present.

Shibli Faraz, the Minister of Science and Technology, also proposed a bill to legislate for the establishment of Pakistan’s National Meteorological Institute, which was entirely passed.

Fateha was also offered for the troops who were killed in a terrorist attack on a security checkpoint in Balochistan’s Kech area.
