An intensive manhunt went on there as police searched the campus for student shooting suspect Christopher Darnell Jones Jr. who is reportedly a former UVA football player. Classes were cancelled on Monday morning at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville due to a manhunt.

UVA President Jim Ryan wrote to the community early on Monday to give an update on the several public safety alerts that were issued in the wake of the 10:30 p.m. Sunday shooting that left three people dead and two others injured.

Jones Jr. is a UVA student, Ryan said, adding that the suspect is still at large and regarded as armed and dangerous. Police have described Jones as a Black male who was last seen with a burgundy jacket or sweatshirt, blue trousers, and red sneakers. Jones was a former UVA football player. Possibly using a black SUV with the Virginia licence plate TWX3580.

“Multiple law enforcement agencies are coordinating to find and apprehend him,” Ryan said. “As of writing, I am heartbroken to report the shooting has resulted in three fatalities; two additional victims were injured and are receiving medical care. We are working with the families of the victims, and we will share additional details as soon as we are able.”

“This is a message any leader hopes never to have to send, and I am devastated that this violence has visited the University of Virginia,” Ryan added. “I am holding the victims, their families, and all members of the University of Virginia community in my heart today, and we will make plans to come together as a community to grieve as soon as the suspect is apprehended.”

The public is asked not to approach Jones and to phone 911 as soon as they spot him.

A UVA warning sent out before 7:30 a.m. Police continued their investigation on and around the school grounds on Monday. The warning stated, “Remain sheltered in place.”  and ” Expect increased law enforcement presence.”

Robyn S. Hadley, vice president and dean of students, stated on Monday that she was in the same situation as “many of you.”
