3 Scientists nominated for Nobel Prize in Physics 2022

Alain Aspect, John F. Clauser, and Anton Zeilinger will receive the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2022 “for experiments with entangled photons, establishing the violation of Bell inequalities, and pioneering quantum information science”.

These three physicists used entangled quantum states, in which two particles behave as a single entity even when they are separated, to carry out ground-breaking research.

The award-giving committee declared on Tuesday that the outcomes had paved the path for new technology based on quantum information.

“Using groundbreaking experiments, Alain Aspect, John Clauser and Anton Zeilinger have demonstrated the potential to investigate and control particles that are in entangled states. What happens to one particle in an entangled pair determines what happens to the other, even if they are really too far apart to affect each other. The laureates’ development of experimental tools has laid the foundation for a new era of quantum technology,” a release said.

The Karolinska Institute in Sweden’s Nobel Assembly bestows the prize, which is undoubtedly one of the most renowned in the scientific community. It is worth 10 million Swedish crowns ($900,357).

A week of Nobel Prize announcements began with the award for medical research. Tuesday’s reward is for physics, followed by Wednesday’s for chemistry and Thursday’s for literature.

The Nobel prizes for achievements in science, literature, and peace were established in the will of Swedish dynamite inventor and rich businessman Alfred Nobel; the economics prize was added later.
