Italy: Giorgia Meloni to become 1st fascist female PM
Exit surveys show that the first fascist confessor was the next Italian minister from Mussolini. The obvious victory of Giorgia Meloni, 45, sends shock waves throughout Europe this evening. Candidate Giorgia Meloni has a general choice that she as the first Italian Prime Minister, who is the best government on the right since the fascist era of Benito Mussolini.
Giorgia Meloni spoke to the media and supporters of Italy early Monday morning and said it was “a night full of pride for many and a night of salvation”.
“It is a victory that I would like to devote all those who are no longer with us and who wanted this night,” Giorgia Meloni said. “Since tomorrow, we have to show our value . The Italians have chosen us and we will not say how we have never done it,” she said.
The preliminary results brought an alliance of extremists to the right under the leadership of the Melonis Brothers of Italy party on the right track to gain at least 44% of the votes according to the Italian interior ministry. With 63% of the vote counted, the ultra-conservative Brothers of Italy party had obtained at least 26%, while the partners of the Lega coalition led by Matteo Salvini obtained around 9% and Forza Italia of Silvio Berlusconi more than 8%. Final results are expected later Monday, but forming a new government is expected to take weeks.
Meloni entered the crowded Italian political scene in 2006 and in 2012 co-founded the Brothers of Italy, a party whose agenda is rooted in euroscepticism and anti-immigration policies. In the last elections in 2018, the party won only 4.5% of the vote, but its popularity has grown in recent years, underscoring Italy’s long-standing rejection of mainstream politics, characterized more recently by the country’s support for anti-establishment parties like the Five was the Star Movement and the League of Salvini
