Thousands of people have been forced to relocate due to flash floods created as a result of the recent prolonged and destructive monsoon in many areas of Pakistan’s Sindh province. In such a situation, in many areas, the sewer canals that discharge rainwater are also flowing backward.
In many places, sewers have been cut with the connivance of influential people, increasing the risk to millions of people.
In this regard, the flood disasters that occurred in the cities of Malkani Sharif, Jhudu, Khairpurgamboh, Hayat Khaskheli, and Roshanabad, in the southern coastal district of Badin of Sindh, and despite the fact that it has been 14 days, the artificial cracks installed in Puran river and MMD Sewer canal was not closed.
A protest demonstration held in front of Hyderabad Press Club yesterday by political and social friends against the non-closure was led by Advocate Ram Kolhi, Central General Secretary of National Student Federation of Pakistan Sufi Laghari, Ravi Meghwar, Dr. Lachman Kolhi, Central General Secretary of Awami Tehreek Noor Ahmad Katiyar.
Workers said that the purpose of this was to bring to light the flood disasters caused by NDMA and administrative incompetence in Badin and Mirpurkhas districts. Badin and Mirpurkhas areas, especially taluka Jhudu, Union Council Malkani Sharif, Hayat Khaskheli, Roshanabad, Khairpurgamboh, and many villages were destroyed in the recent heavy rain-fed floods and the Puran river and MMD Sewer drain.
They said due to the artificial 50-feet crack, a total of four lakh people in these areas have been severely affected and farmers’ crops on millions of acres have been completely destroyed. On the one hand, the farmers have suffered a loss of crores of rupees, while thousands of flood victims are forced to live under the open sky, without any tent, ration, or medicine.
They complained no rescue and relief work has been done by DC Mirpurkhas, DC Badin, local MPA, MNA, and local government in the flood-affected areas. Due to this the residents of the area are facing more difficulties and losses due to cracks in the big sewers like Puran Doro and left Bank Outfall Drain (LBOD).
The protesters raised harsh slogans against the Sindh government, NDMA, and the local government and demanded that the government accept its writ and start relief work immediately in these damaged areas of Badin and Mirpurkhas districts. This circle of protest on behalf of local citizens and political activists will be spread nationwide.
