Tensions escalate as China fires missiles around Taiwan

The Chinese military launched missiles around Taiwan on Thursday in a show of power and retaliation for US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit.

The People’s Liberation Army’s (PLA) Rocket Force launched “multiple types of conventional missiles into several designated sea regions east of Taiwan, accurately hitting targets,” according to the state-run Chinese daily Global Times.

“The missile launches tested the rocket force’s strike precision and area denial capabilities,” a PLA spokesperson said, adding that “relevant sea and airspace control off Taiwan island’s eastern coast has been lifted since the live-fire missile drills hit the targets precisely.”

“The PLA’s words count,” said Tan Kefei, a spokesman for China’s Ministry of National Defense. The PLA joint drills encircling Taiwan are specifically designed to deter a collision between the US and the island.”

Several videos on social media showed smoke billowing out of the Chinese mainland’s southernmost reaches, which appear to be a location of Chinese weaponry from which the missiles are fired.
