LHC refuses to suspend ECP stay in PML-Q head election case

The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Wednesday refused to suspend the stay granted by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) in the case of the election of the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) president.

As a result of the petition’s hearing, Justice Shahid Kareem ordered Agha to reapply for the ECP. This court cannot interfere with the election commission’s affairs because it is an independent institution.

On the other hand, the petitioner’s attorney requested that because the election’s schedule had already been announced, the court allow it to take place. In response, he said, “All we can do is not announce the election result.”

The judge, on the other hand, disagreed.

It has been five days since the ECP announced that Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain would remain the PML-presidential Q’s candidate while suspending the schedule announced by that party’s election commission for internal party elections (Friday, August 5, 2022).

The party’s election commission received a notice from the ECP as well.

Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, the leader of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), filed a petition to ECP Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja seeking the cancellation of the elections.

In the past, the PML-internal Q’s elections were slated to take place on August 10th.
