Nancy Pelosi, speaker of the US House of Representatives, left Taiwan on Wednesday after expressing solidarity and praising its democracy, inciting resentment in China over her brief visit to Taiwan, the island that Beijing claims as its own.
China’s anger over the highest-level US visit to the island in 25 years was shown by a flurry of military action in the nearby waters, a summons to the US ambassador in Beijing, and the suspension of several Taiwanese agricultural imports.
According to Taiwan’s defense ministry, an unprecedented step that a senior defense official described to reporters as “amounting to a sea and air blockade of Taiwan.”, some of China’s planned military drills were to occur within Taiwan’s 12 nautical mile sea and air boundaries.
Pelosi defied China’s multiple warnings and landed late on Tuesday with a congressional delegation on her unannounced but closely watched visit. She said that this demonstrated the US’ unwavering support to Taiwan’s democracy.
Pelosi told Taiwan President Tsai that her group had come to Taiwan to make it clear that the United States would not forsake Taiwan. Beijing suspects Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen of pressing for formal independence, which is a red line for China.
She remarked during her visit, “America’s support for Taiwan is essential now more than ever, and that’s the message we’re bringing here, today”.
“Despite purposefully increased military threats, Taiwan will not surrender”. At an event with Pelosi in Taipei, Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen declared, “We will… continue to hold the line of defence for democracy.”
She also expressed her gratitude to Pelosi for taking actual steps to demonstrate your steadfast support for Taiwan at this crucial time.
Pelosi, a longtime opponent of China, particularly in the area of human rights, met with a former Tiananmen activist, a jailed Hong Kong bookseller, and a recently freed Taiwanese activist.
Chinese social media was filled with outrage on the island over the 82-year-old Democrat’s rejection of Beijing, with one blogger railing: “This old lady-devil, she actually dares to come!”
Newt Gingrich visited Taiwan as the last US House Speaker in 1997. However, Pelosi’s trip coincides with a severe deterioration in US-China ties, and over the past 25 years, China has grown to be a far more potent geopolitical, economic, and military force.
China has never denied using force to annex Taiwan and views it as a part of its territory. China was forewarned by the United States not to use the visit as justification for military action against Taiwan.
In reaction, China’s commerce ministry forbade the export of natural sand to Taiwan, while the country’s customs agency imposed a halt of imports of citrus fruits, chilled white striped hairtail, and frozen horse mackerel from Taiwan.
There were a lot of police officers outside the US consulate in Shanghai, and there seemed to be more security than usual outside the embassy in Beijing, despite the fact that there were few signs of protest against US targets or consumer goods.
