SHC rejects MQM, JI challenges to LB elections

The Sindh High Court (SHC) ruled on Friday that local bodies’ (LBs) elections would be held in Sindh on schedule, rejecting the petitions submitted by Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) and Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P).

The petitions were heard by a two-person SHC bench, presided over by Justice Junaid Ghaffar.

Justice Ghaffar questioned why the LB elections had not been held within 120 days of the Supreme Court’s order during the hearing (SC). Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have already held elections, he noted.

The attorney for the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) responded that the delay was brought on by the delineation of the constituencies.

The following day, the province will hold the first round of the LB elections.
