The Karachi Kings announced on Tuesday that Babar Azam will captain the fan-favorite team for the seventh edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL).
Azam, in response to his appointment as skipper, stated in a statement: “The entire squad, including Imad Bhai, has entrusted me with the captaincy of our beloved Karachi Kings team. To me, this is extremely significant.”
“I’ll work as hard as I can to help the squad achieve even greater success than we’ve had thus far. Karachi and the Kings are my home and family away from home, and I pledge to do everything in my power to ensure that we continue to grow and achieve greater success.
While declaring Azam’s captaincy, Imad Wasim, a member of the Karachi Kings since the inaugural season and captain since 2018 — who captained the team to PSL 5 Champions — grinned with pride.
“As a captain and a spectator of the game, seeing Babar grow into this role as a younger brother, a terrific friend, and a teammate has been a fantastic privilege,” Wasim added. “It is definitely a sign of where this franchise is headed that we have all unanimously agreed that the Kings’ future resides under his leadership.”
Babar has been a part of the franchise for over six years and has been at the heart and spirit of the team since day one, according to franchise owner Salman Iqbal.
“He is not only a lovely human being and leader, but he also epitomises all the team stands for – conviction in beliefs and hard work, unselfish dedication to achievement, and always working to make the team the best on and off the field.”
Wasim Akram, the team’s president, and Tariq Wasi, the team’s CEO, were both present to express their delight and pleasure at the news that the national skipper and long-time king would be given the title of captain — the King of Kings.
Season 7 of the Pakistan Super League is scheduled to take place in Karachi and Lahore from late January to February 2022. In the next days, there will be more information about the squad and the League.
