Hulk Hogan, the greatest of all time showman who helped transform professional wrestling from a regional niche into a global juggernaut, has left the mortal world at the age of 71.

World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) confirmed the passing of the two-time Hall of Famer.

Hogan died in Clearwater, Florida, after suffering cardiac arrest. Emergency services responded to a call at his home early Thursday morning.

No foul play involved

He was taken to Morton Plant Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. No foul play is suspected, and an investigation is ongoing.

Born Terry Gene Bollea, Hogan became a cultural phenomenon. With his signature yellow-and-red ring gear, his booming voice, and his trademark line, “Whatcha gonna do when Hulkamania runs wild on you?”, Hogan embodied the glitz of wrestling’s golden era in the 1980s.

Hulk Hogan’s rise coincided with the explosion of WWE (then WWF) into mainstream consciousness. His battles with wrestling giants like André the Giant, Randy “Macho Man” Savage, and “Rowdy” Roddy Piper remain etched in the memories of generations of fans.

Crowned champion in 1984, Hulk Hogan’s long reign made him synonymous with the sport. His charisma, coupled with his “Real American” persona, made him a fan favorite in arenas and living rooms across the globe.

But Hulk Hogan’s legacy is also one of contradiction. His career faced a dramatic fall from grace in 2015 after leaked audio revealed him using racial slurs. WWE swiftly severed ties, only reinstating him three years later. Despite apologies, the scandal stained the public perception of the wrestling icon. His association with far-right groups in American politics also played a role in his fall from grace.

U.S. President Donald Trump led the tributes on Thursday, calling Hogan “a great friend” and “a strong, tough, smart man with the biggest heart.” WWE described him as “one of pop culture’s most recognizable figures,” while fans flooded social media with tributes, memories, and nostalgia for an era of wrestling Hogan defined.

Loved and loathed at the same time, Hulk Hogan’s impact on wrestling and sports entertainment still remained unmatched. He brought professional wrestling into the mainstream, bridging the gap between athletics and theatrics, and helped build WWE into a global powerhouse.

The immortal Hulk Hogan is gone physically, but the echoes of Hulkamania will reverberate in the world of wrestling forever.
