Kohli on the verge of becoming the second-highest run scorer in ODI history.
Indian cricket icon Virat Kohli is very close to rewriting history as he prepares for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 final against New Zealand, scheduled for Sunday at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
With multiple records within his reach, Kohli’s performance in the grand finale could further cement his legendary status in the sport.
Having already delivered a century and a match-winning half-century in the tournament, the Indian batting maestro is now just 55 runs away from surpassing Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara as the second-highest run scorer in One Day International (ODI) history.
Kohli currently boasts 14,180 runs in 301 ODIs, while Sangakkara accumulated 14,234 runs in 404 matches.
The only player ahead of them is the legendary Sachin Tendulkar, who remains the all-time highest run scorer in ODIs with 18,426 runs.
All-Time Leading Run-Scorers in ODI Cricket:
Sachin Tendulkar (India) – 18,426 runs
Kumar Sangakkara (Sri Lanka) – 14,234 runs
Virat Kohli (India) – 14,180 runs
Ricky Ponting (Australia) – 13,704 runs
Sanath Jayasuriya (Sri Lanka) – 13,430 runs
Kohli is also within striking distance of another major record—becoming the highest run scorer in Champions Trophy history.
The 35-year-old has amassed 746 runs in 17 matches and needs just 47 more to surpass Chris Gayle, who leads the chart with 791 runs in 17 appearances.
As India prepares for their showdown against New Zealand, all eyes will be on Kohli to see if he can etch his name in the record books once again and lead his team to Champions Trophy glory.
