Police claim that Dhanuska Gunathilaka, who was in New South Wales for the T20 World Cup, met a lady online before raping her on Wednesday night.
Danushka Gunathilaka, a cricket player for Sri Lanka, has been accused of sexually assaulting a woman in Sydney’s eastern suburbs just hours after they had gone on their first date.
The 29-year-old woman and the cricketer, who is in Australia for the T20 World Cup, allegedly first connected on a dating app last weekend, according to New South Wales police.
They went on a date on Wednesday and then returned to the woman’s Rose Bay house after exchanging texts and phone calls, according to the police.
It is stated that over the course of several hours, Gunathilaka repeatedly assaulted her there.
After hearing about the alleged assault, detectives started an investigation on Saturday. Early on Sunday morning, the 31-year-old batsman was taken into custody at his hotel on Sussex Street in Sydney’s downtown.
He was refused bail after being accused with four charges of having sex without consent. On Monday, he is scheduled to appear in Waverley municipal court.
The woman communicated with the man for a number of days online before meeting in person, and they went on a date in a public venue, according to NSW sex crimes squad commander Jayne Doherty.
Gunathilaka travelled to Australia with Sri Lanka’s T20 World Cup squad, but he only participated in the team’s opening match, a defeat to Namibia, before suffering a hamstring rupture and being forced to withdraw from the tournament.
Sri Lanka Cricket stated in a statement that it had been informed of the allegations and will closely follow the court proceedings.
The statement read, “We will swiftly launch a thorough investigation into the situation and take serious measures against the player if found guilty (in cooperation with the International Cricket Council).”
