New Zealand’s batsmen were bowled out for 62 in the second Test on Saturday after Mumbai-born spinner Ajaz Patel took a Test-record 10 wickets in India’s 325.
On the second day at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium, Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin took four wickets and fast bowler Mohammed Siraj three, leaving New Zealand 263 runs behind the hosts. The follow-up was not enforced in India.
Earlier in the second session, Ajaz completed his perfect ten by emulating England’s Jim Laker (1956 v Australia) and Indian spin star Anil Kumble (1999 v Pakistan).
With his left-arm spin, he posted numbers of 10-119, but Mayank Agarwal’s 150 and Axar Patel’s 52 guided India to a tough total on a shifting circuit.
In the New Zealand innings, Siraj, who came in to replace the injured Ishant Sharma, struck early, dismissing Will Young for four.
On either side of overs, he got two wickets, including stand-in skipper Tom Latham for 10 and Ross Taylor for one, to complete a hat-trick that Henry Nicholls failed to complete.
As the Kiwis fell further behind, Axar had Daryl Mitchell out for eight, and fellow spinner Ashwin quickly stepped in to claim Nicholls.
Kyle Jamieson top-scored with 17, but none of the Kiwi batsmen were able to withstand the bowling barrage, resulting in the lowest-ever Test score against India by any side.
In India, the previous lowest Test score was 75 against the West Indies in Delhi in 1987.
