The Basij militia in Iran has released a video game featuring George Floyd, a Black man who was killed by a white police officer in the United States last year.
The player must overcome barriers and sidestep adversaries across 30 levels of difficulty in the 3D game “Nejat-e-Azadi” (Defend Freedom), developed by Basij’s IT department.
The game was introduced Tuesday during a digital production conference in Tehran, according to Iran’s Saheb News, which is close to the Basij, a volunteer Islamic militia loyal to the regime.
Iran militia has released George Floyd video game to pay tribute to him.
Floyd’s death in May 2020 provoked the largest racial justice protests in the United States in decades.
Derek Chauvin, a 45-year-old white Minneapolis police officer, was sentenced to more than 22 years in jail for killing Floyd by kneeling on his neck for about ten minutes.
Floyd had been arrested by him and three coworkers on suspicion of having passed a fake $20 bill in a store in Minneapolis.
“Today, the internet is the only place where the United States can still sell its setbacks as successes,” Basij head Gholamreza Soleimani was quoted as saying during the occasion.
According to the Iran Computer and Video Games Foundation, there are at least 32 million gamers among Iran’s population of approximately 80 million.
