The well-known messaging service WhatsApp is developing a new feature that will let users convert audio messages to text.
Users will be able to view audio message transcripts using the new feature if they don’t want to listen to the messages.
The algorithm that recognizes the content of an audio communication and converts it into text has lately come to the attention of WABetaInfo.
However, as the feature is currently in early testing, there are some restrictions. For words that are currently unknown or have a different language chosen as the default, transcriptions are not yet accessible.
To protect user privacy, transcripts will be handled locally on the user’s device rather than being uploaded to WhatsApp or Apple servers. It’s unclear when the transcribing feature will be introduced for Android phones, as it is presently only available on iPhones.
Recent updates to WhatsApp include the addition of status reactions, audio status, link previews on status, as well as a function that allows users to message themselves.
