ISLAMABAD: According to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority’s (PTA) annual report for 2022, the telecom sector generated a record-high income of Rs694 billion in the fiscal year 2021–2022 as usage of telecom services increased in an atmosphere with favourable regulatory conditions. Telecom sector’s revenue hits record highest.
The industry drew $2.07 billion in investments and gave the national treasury Rs325.2 billion, including Rs222.7 billion in taxes. According to the report, which was published on Tuesday, the remaining sum of Rs 102.5 billion was made up of the revenues from the Next Generation Mobile Services auction and the price for licence renewal.
Telecom sector’s revenue hits record highest as it provided reassuring data on the rise in telecom service usage across Pakistan. The telecom sector functioned well despite a difficult year characterised by escalating inflationary pressures and concerns about profitability because of a progressive and supportive regulatory framework, it was emphasised.
A significant accomplishment of the year was that, for the first time in the nation’s history, the volume of mobile phone imports decreased as the majority of the demand was satisfied by locally produced goods.
Pakistan produced a record 41.35 million mobile phones in 2022, but only 17.3 million of those were smartphones, which is only half of what was created in the previous year.
PTA noted in the research that while many multinational brands, including Samsung, Nokia, Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, Techno, and Infinix, have already joined Pakistan’s market as makers, local mobile set production has created jobs for trained people.
