ISLAMABAD: The PTI-led federal government has rejected Sindh’s local government system, claiming that it does not empower citizens.
Asad Umar, the Federal Minister for Planning, Development, and Special Initiatives told a rally of PTI workers in Karachi that the PTI had filed a court challenge against the local government system.
The Centre has slammed Sindh’s local government structure.
Umar slammed the Sindh administration, particularly the Sindh Local Government (Amendment) Bill 2021, which was recently passed.
“This bill [Sindh Local Government Bill] gives no powers to Karachi or any other city under the province’s local government. It’s been proposed as a way to establish a fictitious local government structure. We reject this bill, and now is the time to initiate a campaign in support of Karachi’s and Sindh’s rights “he stated.
The previous finance minister revealed that the mayor of Islamabad would be in charge of critical areas such as health, education, transportation, tourism, water supply, and sewage.
Umar admitted that Karachi’s census had always been a concern. He promised that the city’s new population census would be finished by December 2022, adding that the government was receiving complaints about it since Karachi residents were unable to find work due to an old census.
He stated that the prime minister desired a census every five years.
“In Karachi, a fair and transparent census would be held,” Umar remarked. The Green Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project, according to the minister, will be completed in 10-12 days.
‘Karachi’s development path has begun.’
As he revealed that PM Imran Khan will inaugurate the project in Karachi in two weeks, Umar stated that the PTI-led government will fix Karachi’s transportation challenges. “Prime Minister Imran Khan is coming [to Karachi] to address the folks’ transportation problems,” Umar remarked.
“Karachi’s march toward growth has begun,” he remarked. On September 19, a cargo ship carrying the Green Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project buses entered Pakistani land, bringing public transportation in Karachi one step closer to gaining a much-needed boost.
