Flood victims need mosquito nets
People in the floodplains are in urgent need of mosquito nets to protect themselves and their families from dengue, malaria and other waterborne diseases. The number of infections increases every day as people spend nights without adequate shelter.
The recent flooding has not only destroyed a large number of homes, but has also robbed people of livestock, crops and livelihoods. After their homes were destroyed, families resorted to life on the streets, although some were transferred to relief camps set up by local governments.
However, homelessness is not the only threat these people face. Flood victims were already at risk of various diseases, despite the fact that the government and private NGOs had set up several free medical camps. People urgently need preventative measures to protect themselves and their families from waterborne diseases.
Speaking to the media on Sunday, Multan Children’s Complex (DMS) Deputy Medical Superintendent (DMS) Dr. Mazhar Shah that humid and hot weather favors the flourishing of these diseases, which pose a threat to people living near floodplains. Given the expected threat of dengue and malaria, flood victims should be equipped with mosquito nets as a preventative measure against dengue.
Dr. Shah asked the government, NGOs and local philanthropists to donate mosquito nets as a preventative measure against dengue and malaria. He added that a large number of camps have been set up in the city to raise funds for flood victims and urged volunteers to mobilize people to donate mosquito nets.
