Israel fires missiles towards Syrian military position near Damascus

According to Syria’s military, Israel fired three missiles at Syrian military installations near Damascus, causing material damage.

On Friday, state media quoted an unnamed military officer as stating that the strike occurred shortly before midnight on Thursday, and that Syrian air defences shot down several of the Israeli missiles.

The missiles hit positions of Iran-backed rebels southwest of the capital, near the suburb of Qatana, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, located in the United Kingdom.

The Israeli military has made no remark.

Over the years, Israel has launched hundreds of attacks against targets in Syria, but these operations are rarely acknowledged or addressed.

It has admitted, however, that it targets Iranian-backed militias’ sites, including as Lebanon’s Hezbollah, which has fighters in Syria. It claims to be targeting arms shipments destined for militias.

Israel defends its attacks on Syrian installations and weaponry by claiming that Iran’s position on the country’s northern border constitutes a red line.
