Foreign visitors must abide by laws of Islamic Republic: Iran

Foreign visitors to Iran must abide by the laws of the Islamic Republic, the foreign ministry spokesman said Monday, as protests continue over the death of a woman in police custody who accused Tehran of “foreign enemies”.

Last month, Iran said it had arrested nine European citizens for their role in the riots over Mahsa Amini’s death.

“Iran is a safe country and we expect foreigners who visit Iran for tourism and business to respect our laws,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kaanani said at a televised press conference.

Anti-government demonstrations erupted in September. January 17 in Amini’s hometown of Saqez became the biggest challenge Iran’s religious leaders have faced in years, with many calling for the ousting of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

The nationwide protests have received wide international support, prompting Tehran to lash out at its critics by accusing the US and Israel of exploiting the unrest to try to destabilize the Islamic Republic
