Hamas delegation to visit Syria to revive ties after decade

Later this month, a delegation from the Palestinian Hamas resistance movement will travel to Syria in an effort to mend ties with the Syrian government that had been cut off for more than ten years.

According to a senior Hamas official, the travel will happen after delegates from the Gaza-based organisation return from their trip to Algeria on October 10 to discuss reconciliation with the opposing Fatah movement, which is led by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.

Details of the journey to Syria were corroborated by a second source, a Palestinian official with knowledge of the situation.

The news follows last month’s announcement by the Hamas leadership that it was reestablishing contact with the Damascus government.

Hamas expressed gratitude in an official statement at the time in response to condemn multiple Israeli bombings against various areas in Syria. Hamas said they appreciated “the Syrian leadership and people for supporting the Palestinian people and their just cause.”

Hamas confirms that it goes ahead with its decision to restore ties with the Syrian Arab Republic to serve the interest of the Arab and Muslim Ummah, above all the Palestinian cause, especially in light of the escalating regional and international developments concerning the Palestinian cause,”, “We look forward to the day when Syria restores its leading position in the Arab and Muslim Ummah. Hamas supports all sincere efforts aimed at restorations of peace, stability and prosperity in Syria,” the statement read.

2011 saw a deterioration in ties between Hamas and the Syrian government as a result of the start of an externally backed uprising in the Arab country.

The next year, the Palestinian Hamas resistance group relocated its Damascus headquarters to Doha, the capital of Qatar.
