Kremlin rejects claims against Russia using nuclear weapons in Ukraine

The Kremlin dismissed a British media report that Russia was ready to show its willingness to use nuclear weapons in the conflict with Ukraine.

On Monday, The Times newspaper reported that Russia was planning a nuclear test on the Ukrainian border. According to the London newspaper, NATO had warned its members against a possible nuclear test by Russia.

The newspaper also claimed that a train from the nuclear branch of the Russian Defense Ministry was destined for Ukraine.

Commenting on the Times article, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Tuesday that Russia did not want to participate in Western drills in what he called “nuclear rhetoric”.

“The Western media, Western politicians, and heads of state are currently doing a lot of nuclear rhetoric exercises,” Peskov said. “We don’t want to participate in this.” Meanwhile, on Sunday, the Italian newspaper La Repubblica reported that NATO had sent its members a report on the alleged movements.

British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly has announced that Britain will react to Russia’s use of “tactical” nuclear weapons.

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock also said on Tuesday that Russia’s threat to use nuclear weapons should be taken seriously, accusing Moscow of trying to blackmail Western countries with “irresponsible threats”.

Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered a military operation in Ukraine on February 24. At the time, Putin said one of the goals of what he called a “special military operation” was to “denazify” Ukraine.

Since the start of the conflict between the two countries in February, the United States and its European allies have imposed a series of sanctions on Russia and sent numerous batches of advanced weapons to Ukraine.
